The survey of wildlife, including elephants at Niassa Game Reserve. It was carried out from the 1st to the 19th of October 2011 using the aerial sample count method with a light (Cessna 206) fixed wing aircraft. It is important to note that the drop in the 2011 estimate compared to 2009 corresponds with an increase in carcasses, as well as evidence of observer bias in the 2009 count. As such, the 2009 and 2011 counts are not comparable, and the 2011 estimate should be compared, rather, with the 2004 estimate available in the 2007 African Elephant Status Report.
