An aerial total count was conducted between 30 March and 5 April 2014, covering the entire park (3201 km2) in six days, with a total of 43,7 hours of flying. The total count was conducted at an altitude of 300ft (92m), with 600m transect spacing, using a Cessna 182 aircraft. A total of 443 elephant were counted within the Zakouma survey zone. The search rate for block 5 was 101.98/hr. Data on search rate for the other strata was not collected.
The elephant population of Zakouma declined significantly after the main poaching years post 2005. Information on carcass ratios is provided on page 12 in graph format.
