The elephant population estimates in the Niassa National Reserve and adjacent areas in Mozambique using the aerial sample count method. It was conducted in October 2009 using a fixed wing aircraft. It is important to note that apart from the Niassa national reserve and its buffer zones an additional 6700 km2, comprising 3 adjacent blocks (P-Negomano, Q-Majune, and R-Monte Mosale) were surveyed in 2009. In the report for the 2011 count of Niassa (available on this website) it was noted that there was evidence of observer bias in the 2009 count.
