The aerial surveys of the Tete Province zone were undertaken by the Wildlife Conservation Society
(WCS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, between the 10th October and the 1st November 2014.
An aerial survey of three zones in the Tete Province, undertaken by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, covering areas east of the Musengezi River (including the Magoe N.P), West of the Musengezi River and a section north of Lake Cahora Bassa. The survey took place from the 10th October to the 1st November 2014, covering 19,818km2. A total of 514 transects were flown, with a total length of 9,588km. The population estimate for Tete survey zone is 1,654 animals (95% CI: 812 - 2,495). The majority of the population (65%) is concentrated in a small area west of the Musengezi River. No elephants were observed in Magoe N.P. and no elephants were observed in the survey zones north of the Cahora Bassa lake (2003 surveys estimated <100 animals in this area). Overall overall a small decline in the estimates between the 2010 and the 2014 surveys was observed.
The largest section of the survey was implemented using a Cessna C206. A small number of strata along the eastern section were completed with a Cessna C182.
